Lucky Penny brings back their popular short play festival under a new name. Formerly known as the “8 x 10 Festival”, the new “North Bay New Plays” will feature new and original stage plays of ten minutes or less written by North Bay authors only. Performances will take place October 15-31, 2021 at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center.

SUBMISSION INFO FOR AUTHORS

 

TIMELINE:

  • Submission deadline: Must be received by July 31, 2021.
  • Evaluation period: August 1-August 20, 2021.
  • Authors notified and selections announced: August 23, 2021
  • Selection of director(s) and casts: By August 31, 2021
  • Rehearsal period: September 1-October 14, 2021 (At directors' discretion)
  • Performance dates: October 15-October 31, 2021 (3 weekends)

 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:


1.Submissions must be original, unpublished, and (preferably) unproduced plays that run 10 minutes or less. Authors should write for an adult audience. Comedy and drama, both musical and none-musical will be considered. Musical submissions must include sheet music/score as needed. Legal clearance of materials not in the public domain is the full responsibility of the submitting playwright. While there is no theme or content restriction, authors are encouraged to submit plays that speak to contemporary life.


2.Only authors residing in the North Bay counties of Napa, Sonoma, Marin and Solano are eligible.


3.Six actors will portray all the roles in the eight plays chosen; three female identifying and three male identifying, of various ages. Your play can use 1 to 6 actors in any configuration you choose.


4.Scripts and related materials must be received by July 31, 2021.


5. Sets, lighting, and other technical requirements must be minimal. Since the winning plays will be produced, no play considered technically un-producible will be considered.


6. Running time is to be 10 minutes or less, which may mean 6-10 pages depending upon the density of dialogue. Authors are responsible for submitting work that is within the 10-minute running time limit. Cuts will be requested of the playwright for any selected play which runs over the limit regardless of the number of pages in the script.


7. Plays must be typed/word-processed and presented in proper script format.


8. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Email scripts in PDF format to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . No printed and mailed scripts will be considered.


9. All submissions are judged blind. Please do not put your name or any identifying information on any page other than the cover page. The cover page should include your name, address, phone number, e-mail and the play title. Please also include this information in the body of the email to which your play is attached.


10. A limit of two (2) plays may be submitted by each author. No more than one play per author may be chosen for production.


11. The eight best plays will be selected by the reading committee from all entries. Notification to authors will be made by August 23, 2021. The eight selected plays will be presented October 15-31, 2021 as “North Bay New Plays 2021”


12. A “People’s Choice” award will go to the play voted as the best by our audiences. The author of the “People’s Choice” will receive a $250 honorarium.

 

 

WAIVERS AND CONDITIONS:

  • The selection of directors, actors and designers for the selected plays is at the sole discretion of Lucky Penny Productions. An author may participate in the process if participation is requested by the producing companies or the director selected for the project.
  • Entry of a script into this festival grants to Lucky Penny Productions and Napa Valley Playhouse the right to produce the entered play only for this specific event in October 2021 and authors retain all rights to their work for future production or publication.
  • The producing companies reserve the right to remove and/or replace any play selected by the reading committee if, once in rehearsal, the play is found to be unproduceable as determined by the festival coordinator. Selection of a replacement play is at the sole discretion of the producing companies.
  • The producing companies reserve the right to reschedule or cancel the festival at their discretion if conditions beyond their control require it.
  • Authors, if their play is selected for production, grant to Lucky Penny Productions the right to use their name, biographical information and photo for purposes of publicity and marketing during the period August 23, 2021 through the performances dates October 15-31,2021. 
  • Submission of a script to this competition signifies the acceptance of these waivers and conditions.
